The Sóc Sơn waste-to-energy generation plant in Sóc Sơn District, Hanoi, officially began its first phase on Monday morning and connected to the national grid.

With an investment of roughly 300 million USD, it’s the largest waste power plant in Vietnam with a capacity of burning 4,000 tonnes of dry waste, equivalent to nearly 5,000 tonnes of fresh waste, per day. The designed power generation capacity from the incineration of phase 1 is 15 Megawatts. The project is expected to solve the waste treatment issues of Hanoi and many localities across the country.

Hanoi produces around 7,000 tons of trash a day, which are mainly processed at two waste treatment complexes in Soc Son District and Son Tay Town. Until now, they were mostly buried or turned into fertilizer, with a very small portion being burnt to produce electricity.

The 8-million-strong hospital has been facing serious waste handling problem. Scenes of trash overflowing the streets and left uncollected for days have recurred in recent years.
